Safety and content rules

The rules every companion, chat, photo and video follows, how we make sure they're kept, and what to do if something isn't right.

Last updated

The short version

  • Every companion is a fictional adult, created as 21 or older, with a signed record of how she was made.
  • Companions are AI, and the chat says so at the start of every session. AI companion chatbots may not be suitable for some minors.
  • Companions only take part in clearly consensual adult scenarios.
  • Every message, photo and clip is checked; people review anything unclear.
  • If you mention suicide or self-harm, the chat shows crisis services for your country.
  • Reports are reviewed within 5 business days; illegal content is removed immediately and reported.

Every companion is a fictional adult

Every companion on Sinfully is a fictional character made with AI. Each one is created as 21 or older. The creator checks this age on our server before making a companion.

  • Clearly adult, everywhere. Companions look, talk and are described as adults in their pictures, names, profiles and chat. There's no school, “teen”, “barely legal”, childlike or age-play framing anywhere: not in art, names, outfits, bios or tags.
  • Nobody real. Companions' faces were generated from written descriptions. No real person's photo, name or likeness was used to make them.

Every companion is an AI

You're always chatting with an AI: a computer program, not a person, that can't feel human emotions. Companions are labelled AI wherever you chat with them, and the chat says so itself, in a notice from us rather than from her:

  • at the start of every session (your first message after 30 minutes or more without one, and when a chat begins);
  • every 3 hours if a session carries on.

Ask a companion whether she's real and she'll tell you she's an AI.

Not for anyone under 18

Sinfully is for adults only. AI companion chatbots may not be suitable for some minors.

What we never allow

In chat, photos and videos, whatever the story or wording:

  • anyone under 18, or anyone who looks, sounds or acts under 18;
  • real people, including celebrities, or anyone's likeness;
  • sex without consent, including with anyone asleep, unconscious, drugged or too drunk to agree, and coercion;
  • incest, including step, foster and adoptive family;
  • strangulation, choking or suffocation;
  • animals;
  • faeces, urine play, vomiting or menstruation;
  • blood, gore, mutilation, killing or death, including anyone dead;
  • anything that promotes or facilitates human trafficking, sex trafficking, exploitation or physical abuse;
  • anything else that's illegal.

These rules are part of our Terms of Service. Breaking them gets requests refused and, for anything serious, the account closed.

A record for every companion

We keep a provenance record for every companion, and a companion can't go live until it's complete. It records:

  • How she was made: the tools and the written description used to create her.
  • No real person: a signed statement from a named member of our team that no real person's photo, name or likeness was used.
  • A likeness check, to make sure she doesn't resemble a real, identifiable person.
  • An adult-appearance review, confirming she's clearly an adult.
  • Who approved her, and when, for each of these steps.

Photos and clips shown on a companion's profile go through the same review before they're published.

Checks on every message, photo and clip

  • Messages. Every message you send, and every reply a companion writes, is checked automatically against the rules above. Anything that breaks them is refused or rewritten before you see it.
  • Photos. Every photo is checked by an automated vision check before it's sent: one clearly adult person and nothing against the rules. If it fails, or the check can't run, the photo is thrown away and never sent, and your Sins (our in-app credits) are returned.
  • Videos. Every clip is checked frame by frame before it's delivered. Anything unclear is held privately for a person on our team to review, and isn't released unless they approve it. Refused clips are refunded.
  • People, not just machines. Our team reviews anything the checks are unsure about, every report, and samples of what the checks let through.

Automated checks can get things wrong in both directions. If something was refused that shouldn't have been, the help centre explains why; if something got through that shouldn't have, please report it.

If you're struggling: our crisis protocol

If something you write suggests you may be thinking about suicide or hurting yourself, a companion stops whatever you were doing and the chat puts you in touch with people who can help. This is how it works.

  • What we look for. Every message you send is checked for suicidal thoughts, a wish to be dead, plans or intent to end your life, something you've already done, and self-harm, in English and several other languages. The checks are built on the questions of the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale, a screening tool used by clinicians, and leave out figures of speech like “this is killing me”. When a message could go either way, an automated check reads it with the messages before it.
  • What the companion does. She steps out of any story or sexual scene, answers kindly, asks if you're safe, and encourages you to talk to someone. She never plays out, describes or encourages suicide or self-harm, in that reply or any other: every reply she writes is checked for it before you see it.
  • Where we refer you. Under her reply, the chat shows free, confidential crisis services for the country you're in, and the emergency number. That reply never uses up a free message, and it's sent even if you've run out.
  • What we keep. To report to California's Office of Suicide Prevention, as its law requires, we count how many times the crisis services were shown, by day and country only, with nothing about who. What's said in a crisis never becomes one of her memories, and she won't text you first after one.

In danger right now?

Call your local emergency number. A companion is an AI and can't help in an emergency.

Reporting something

Anyone can report a companion, photo, clip or message, with or without an account, including if a companion looks like you. Email [email protected] or see Content removal for what to include.

Our promise

We review every report within 5 business days, and remove anything illegal or non-consensual immediately.

Illegal content, trafficking and abuse

We prohibit any use of Sinfully that promotes or facilitates human trafficking, sex trafficking, exploitation or physical abuse. There are no real people on the service, no way to contact or meet anyone through it, and no payments to individuals.

If we find content that may be illegal, we:

  1. remove it, and the companion if needed, straight away;
  2. preserve the evidence securely, with access restricted, for as long as the law requires;
  3. report suspected child sexual abuse material to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), and other illegal content to the police or the relevant authority;
  4. close the accounts involved.
